Knots have a long history. In the past they were an integral part of everyday life, indispensable for seamen, craftsmen and farmers. It seems nowadays that knots have been pushed back to recreational purposes. Knots have however experienced a small renaissance and that is to be found in the arboricultural industry. Above all it is the friction knots that have been refound, invented and optimized by tree climbers.

Dirk Lingens, a German arborist and self-confessed knot junkie, has collected and recorded knots commonly used in the arboricultural industry. There re also a few exotic and uncommon knots, some are published there for the first time. The book is not only useful for the arborist but anyone with an interest in knots.
