The Noise of Time is an extraordinary novel. Julian Barnes is an extraordinary novelist.

Let me put it another way. I would read Julian Barnes even if the subject of the book was 'watching paint dry'. He's that good. And, in fact, when I read the synopsis of this, his latest novel - the life of a Soviet composer - I wondered whether a book on paint drying would be the racier read. A Soviet composer! God how dull!

But no. Barnes does it again. Get this book.
