Description
The Building of Galena: An Architectural Legacy by Carl H. Johnson
Signed by author
From Introduction:
"Galena played a prominent role in the development of the United States, and especially of the Upper mississippi Lead Mine Region. The city has left a remarkable memorial to its distinguished past, preserved in wood, brick, and stone. Although Galena's growth has been recorded, researched, studied, and analyzed, the town's history is most effectively experienced by those who walk her streets and climb her hills. It is that visual experience which has prompted an artist to produce this book.
The Building of Galena is in no way a definitive history of the city and its architecture. It will review some of the past events from the town's beginning to the turn of the century. Whenever possible, the early settlers will tell Galena's story through newspaper accounts, personal letters, reminiscences, and vintage photographs. Paintings and drawings of the city as it appears today give additional testimony to the legacy of architectural wealth left to us by Galena's pioneers."
