Description
The Eagle Squadrons: Yanks in the RAF, 1940-1942
Vern Haugland
David and Charles- Hardcover-1st ed., 1979. Xiii + 206 pp., photo-plates.
From all over the United States from 1940-1942, some 240 pilots came to England in units that became known as the Eagle Squadrons. They were quickly embraced by their fellow RAF pilots and many of them became leading aces of the RAF and later the United States Army Air Force.
This is their story, told fully for the first time. Through personal accounts, logbooks, official records, contemporary documents and other research, the author fills in many previously missing parts of the Eagles’ history and also clears away some myths.
Most important, in describing how the Eagles were formed, how they entered the RAF and prepared for battle, how they became some of the most lethal squadrons in the RAF, and how they battled against terrible odds and endured some fatal miscalculations.
The author has revived the excitement and drama that surrounded the Eagles as they helped to stem the Nazi tide. Ex-Lib with usual markings
