Johannes C Andersen came to NZ from Denmark in 1874 as a child and later worked for the Department of Lands and Survey in Canterbury Moving to Wellington he became prominent in The Polynesian Society and was the first Librarian of the Alexander Turnbull Library He studied poetry, Maori place names, history and music, NZ flora and fauna; made journeys with Elsdon Best and Te Rangi Hiroa; and was the author of many authoritative NZ history books
He wrote a lot of poetry and this was the first book of his poems to be published Some of the poems are: Rosemary and Rue; Pikiarero, Yellow Clematis; The Sharing of the Earth; Twilight and the Makomako; Waterfall and the Piwakawaka; In the Forest; Home-Echoes; etc
