Henry Sewell became the first Premier of NZ in 1856. He willed that his Journal be kept secret until after his death These volumes cover his life in Canterbury from the earliest days of the settlement & his connections with the Canterbury Association

He was a contemporary of Wakefield, Governor Grey, Featherston and Cargill and there are stories of these people

Volume 2 deals mainly with his experiences as a Parliamentarian in Auckland, comments on early Station life in South Canterbury and the exploration of Banks Peninsula Maori issues also discussed
