regular Soldier: A Life in the New Zealand Army
Colonti Frank Rennie, CBE, MC, has had a remarkable life. In 1970 he retired after an impressive 34year military career which took him to the Pacific, Italy, Japan, Britain, Malaya and Fiji. lie was selected to form and train the New Zealand Special Air Service (SAS) Squadron which he then commanded for its two year operational tour with the elite British 22 SAS Regiment, in the deep Malayan jungle during the Emergency. Frank Rennie was one of the few who joined the New Zealand Regular Army as a private soldier in 1937 and went through to the rank of full colonel. After instructing at Trentham, he went to Fiji in 1942, where he was commissioned in the field and then served in New Caledonia and the Solomons. Service in Italy followe(i where, in the 23rd Battalion, Frank Rennic took part in the final campaign. From Italy he went to Japan as pan of the original J ayforce. After the war, having been granted a Regular commission, Frank Rennie directly involved in establishing N w Zealand Army instructional and training standards and was later appointed Chief Instructor of Infantry at WaiourLl. During this period he was awarded the MBE. hard back
