A Wesleyan missionary, Ironside arrived in NZ in 1839 and remained almost 20 years. In that time he travelled much of the country and foresaw land dispute problems between Maori and settlers.
His successive posts were: Mangungu on the Hokianga, Kawhia, Poert Underwood in Cloudy Bay (Marlborough Sounds, Nelson and Taranaki.
