Winkelmann's Waitemata: Classic Auckland Yachting By Robin Elliott, Harold Kidd & T L Rodney Wilson
For over a century, the sport of yachting on Waitemata Harbour has been the pride of Auckland.
While each decade seems to have thrown up dedicated marine photographers who have faithfully recorded the craft of their time, none have attained the stature of Henry Winkelmann, the greatest marine photographer this country has ever known.
For the first time, a broad selection of his classic marine images has been put together in a single volume. They range from the mid 1880s when the sport was in its infancy, through the heyday of Auckland's mullet boat yachting in the years just before the First World War, and end with images taken just before his retirement in the mid 1920s. Many of the images here have never been seen before.
There are the familiar names, Ariki, Rainbow, Viking, Moana, lorangi and many other great yachts from the yards of Logan and Bailey, but many unfamiliar names as well, such as Ronaki, Lupe, Undine and Doreen. Whatever their stature as yachts, all the photographs are part of the Auckland Museum's precious Winkelmann Marine collection.
Winkelmann's Waitemata provides a fascinating insight into the origins and history of early New Zealand yachting.
