Description
This is an auction for BLEAK HOUSE by CHARLES DICKENS.
His masterpiece.
This is the complete and unabridged text, in two hardback volumes.
Amazon.com review:
"BLEAK HOUSE is a magnificent novel, and an enormously rewarding reading experience. First and foremost it is the story of Jarndyce and Jarndyce, a lawsuit over the contents of a will, and the effects of these proceedings on the parties involved. This lawsuit has caused some to go insane and others to die of despair while they wait for a judgement. Secondly, BLEAK HOUSE is a mystery story involving Lady Honoria Dedlock and her husband's attorney, Mr. Tulkinghorn. One character connects these stories: Esther Summerson, a young woman of impeccable character. Esther narrates a good portion of the story and in my opinion these are the most enjoyable segments of the novel. Following the death of the aunt who raised her and some time spent in a boarding school, Esther becomes the ward of John Jarndyce, a beneficent old gentleman, who is also guardian for his two young cousins, Richard Carstone and Ada Clare. Mr. Jarndyce, Richard and Ada are all parties to Jarndyce and Jarndyce. They along with Esther reside at Bleak House, where Richard and Ada become romantically involved. Shortly after arriving at Bleak House, Esther discovers that she bears a striking resemblance to the lovely Lady Dedlock, who harbours a dark secret. BLEAK HOUSE is an entertaining and engrossing read: poignant, suspenseful and unforgettable. A wonderful work from a master storyteller!"
