The Backward sex was Ian Cross's second novel, originally published in 1960 after his successful debut with The God Boy. It is a candid and funny novel about an adolescent male coming to terms with women and sex, and with his own anxieties about them.
Ian Cross has had a long and distinguished career in journalism and broadcasting. He was the first holder of the Burns Fellowship in Literature at the University of Otago, and edited - The New Zealand Listener from 1973 to 1977, when he became Chairman and Chief Executive of the Broadcasting Corporation of New Zealand.He retired in 1986.
