Russell Jackson (1947-)

Russell Jackson studied at Auckland University and Graphic Arts at the Auckland Institute of Technology, from 1968 - 71. He learnt lithography at Elam Art School and did etching classes under Carole Shepheard and Rodney Fumpston. He has been a full time painter for more than 25 years. He is especially known for his coastal landscapes and birdlife rendered with a particularly New Zealand feel, in enamel paint.

Living in Aucklands Waitakere Ranges played a part in Russells practice as the coastal cliffs and beaches of the area are featured in many of his works.

Jacksons use of enamel board gives his paintings a different look from that achieved with oil on canvas. Enamel cannot be easily mixed and is very fluid. He keeps each brushmark discrete and allows runs and drips in the more generalised parts of the painting, such as rocks and undergrowth, to give the work a free quality.

Jackson is the author of "Wildlife New Zealand - An Artists Impression" published in 1984 and reprinted in 1989. He has held major exhibitions throughout New Zealand in major galleries and his works hang in private collections here and overseas.
