This is Honore de Balzac's classic novel which is part of his 'Comedie humaine'.

This edition, published by Gallimard, contains a foreword by Felicien Marceau, information on Balzac's life and copies the forewords to the first and third editions.

The novel is about Eugene de Rastignac, a law student, who lives at the boarding house of Madame Vauquer. The story follows his difficulties in obtaining enough money to become a fashionable man about town, whilst abandoning his studies and also his friendship with Pere Goriot, a formerly rich man who has become destitute after giving all his money away to his daughters.
