Over recent months I have sold hundred of pwm DC speed controllers of 2 different types. Both types give a full speed control electronically to ensure full torque from speeds from about 5% to full speed (Very different from controlling speed by reducing the voltage which reduces torque to almost zero).

The first model was a low cost little beauty for electric motors rated at 5 to 40v at 3A . It was widely used by robotic enthiusiasts and modellers
i In answer to a demand for higher currents for use on 4WD vehicle and boat winches, the second model works on input voltages of 6v to 90v, and up to 1000watt. This ones have been widely used for applications as diverse as lathes and kontiki fishing craft.

. Because these outputs very high current pulses (to average up to 10A for this model) input sources must allow for those for high peak currents. Rule of thumb is input power should allow for peaks about 3 to 4 times output Amps. Car batteries are fine.
