a) High DSR (Distance to spot) ratio. Most units beam a tiny laser spot just to indicate the target but the laser itself does not do measurements. An independent Iinfra-red focussed detector actually measures the average temp over a wider area centred on the spot. The further from the target the larger that area and thus lower the accuracy. A common unit with 8:1 DSR ratio actually measures average temp of a 1.2 sqm area at 10 metres, whilst this more accurate DT-480 measures a spot of aprox 0.75 sqm.

B) The next feature to look for is the ability to display at the same time, the average temp as well as Max or Min and automatically store these.

C) Finally look for one where the laser can be switched off for use in areas where it could possibly point in someone's eye
