Spinning wheel

Traditional style

Dated 1981

Nagy wheels were made by Istvan Nagy in Wellington up till 1978. Close to that year he sold out to a member of his business, and the name changed to 'Nagy by Woodspin'. Unless you have an earlier wheel to place beside this wheel, it would be difficult to explain any differences. Most of the wheel uses original Nagy components, but there are some changes. For example the wheel sits a little higher because of longer legs placed at a slightly different angle. The changes are thus quite minor. Some wooden parts look to be stronger.

Most second-hand Nagy wheels lack a threading hook and a small grommet which supports the flyer, but the hook is still with this wheel, and I have found a new grommet for it.

It looks to be made of kauri as were earier Nagy wheels.

The Nagy in its day was known as the Rolls Royce of NZ wheels. One selling point was that you could crank it up with the treadle (without a brake), and it would run for a minute without stopping.

This wheel lives up to expectations in that it is a lovely wheel to use.

It comes with four bobbins and a Lazy Kate.

Set up with a new Ashford turbo drive-band which makes treadling a full bobbin easy. Serviced by an official Ashford stockist.

I cannot post this wheel but I can take it to Wellington for pick-up in Whitby in the first week of August.
