The grid on top is an essential part of this diffuser. Without it light from the flash is not directed to the ceiling, but disperses around the room and the does not create a pleasing effect particularly on a face

It is not designed for direct flash as under these circumstances it provides no benefit.

It's value is in widely dispersing the flash. This dispersed light falls on both the subject and the ceiling. Depending on how high it is tilted upwards a great deal of the light output bounces from the ceiling for a softer, more balanced and natural image. Without this diffuser, bounce flash directed to the ceiling leaves dark shadows beneath the eyebrows, nose and chin, because very little of the light directly illuminates the subject due to the relatively narrow beam. This diffuser creates the same bounce effect from the ceiling but fills in the shadows on the subject at the same time.

It fits cleanly over the head of your existing flash.
