If you are planning to do a roadtrip in the USA, you should really consider buying a GPS. You will not want to rely on your mobile's GPS, especially if you are planning to go to Death Valley! And you will want to save battery to take pictures of the amazing American landscapes!

The car rental companies charge you from $12 to $20 a day for a basic GPS, which means in a 12-day trip you will pay the car rental company as much as you would pay for a "second-hand" top quality GPS!

FInally, instead of bringing it back to NZ, like I did, you can easily resell it in the USA. I was told by the seller I could download the NZ maps for free, but that is not true. You need to pay more than $100 for NZ maps.
