Want to have a go with RFID? This package is just what you need.

Included is an RC522 13.56 Mhz RFID reader/writer, an ID card type tag, and a key fob type tag, and a couple of headers which you may find useful to connect it.

I have used this Arduino library https://github.com/miguelbalboa/rfid to get started, the wiring is super simple...

Rfid module .. to .. Arduino (Uno/Nano/Pro Mini...) SDA .. to .. D10 SCK .. to .. D13 MOSI .. to .. D11 MISO .. to .. D12 IRQ .. to .. not connected GND .. to .. GND RST .. to .. D9 3.3V .. to .. 3.3V (if your arduino doesn't supply 3.3v, you'll have to setup a 3.3v regulator to provide it)

Install Miguel's library and upload the reading example to your Arduino, open the serial terminal, and hold the card in front of the sensor, you'll see all the information about the card including it's serial number printed in the terminal. Now hold the key fob in front of the reader, shazam there's the information about that one.

Migeul's code also includes an example of writing to the RFID devices (simply incrementing a counter as an example), so upload that to your Arduino, open the terminal, and hold the card in front of the device. Take the card away and then bring it back. If you look closely you'll see in the terminal output that a counter is incrementing each time you present the card. You can also write to the key fob, just present it to the device, voila it increments.

Google is your friend for more information about RFID, the 13.56 Mhz varient of it, Mifare protocols/tags, and of course Arduino. Go forth and authenticate!

Specs in brief: 3.3V at 13-26mA, 13.56 Mhz Range: 0 ~ 60mm Chipset Datasheet: http://www.nxp.com/documents/data_sheet/MFRC522.pdf
