For UHF aerials If your aerial system uses a masthead amplifier, then it will typically be an outdoor amplifier (mounted on the aerial pole) and a power supply (at the TV end). The power supply sends power back up the aerial cable to power the amplifier. If you then put a splitter inbetween, it must have a powerpass port to allow the power to get from the power supply to the amplifier. If you dont have an amplifier as most dont, then it does not matter if your splitter is power passive, 1 port powerpass or all ports powerpass.

For Satellite Dishes Same principle as described above except that it is the satellite receiver box that sends power back up the cable to power the LNB on the dish. The reason for using a splitter with all ports powerpass is so that any of the receiver boxes connected to the splitter can power the LNB on the dish. You could still use a splitter with 1 port powerpass for satellite, but the receiver box connected to the powerpass port has to be left on for the others to work.
