What is Manuka Honey?
Manuka honey is a monofloral (single flower) honey produced by bees which fed only on manuka flower. Manuka honey from New Zealand comes when beekeepers set up their hives in wild uncultivated areas in which Manuka bushes grow. The bees gather nectar from flowers of the Manuka. Manuka honey comes out in darker colour than normal honey, and has a distinctive and rich taste that is implicative of the flavour of other tea tree products.
What is the difference between regular Manuka honey and Active Manuka Honey?
This is the most interesting and important part, but yet the trickiest part as well. You have to understand this in order to ensure your honey is worth every dollar spent.
Regular Manuka honey is used very effectively for treating sore throats, colds, canker sores, fever blisters, acne, pimples, and the best thing is that it also tastes great on toast! It is important to know that both regular and Active Manuka honeys are gathered from the flower of the Manuka bush. The difference between these two honeys is the level of concentration of the non-hydrogen peroxide, which is the additional antibacterial properties that have the ability to destroy a wider range of much more powerful bacteria. The term “Active Manuka Honey” was developed to distinguish Manuka honey that contains non-hydrogen peroxide antibacterial properties from Manuka honey that did contain this activity. A regular Manuka honey is called ‘regular’ because the non-hydrogen peroxide activity cannot be detected in the honey.
