Description
Auction for one Red Tamarillo plant (30-40cm high) in pot as pictured.
This Tamarillo plant stock was originally sourced from a small Marlborough Sounds orchard, so will be hardy to Wellington conditions!
Tamarillos are very frost tender so care is required to cover and protect if risk of frosts. Luckily windy Wellington has very few if any hard frosts over winter.
Plant your Tamarillo in a sunny sheltered spot with fertile soil. Simply dig a large hole and fill or mix compost through existing soil to improve soil structure if required.
Your tamerillo plant will respond well to regular feeding of sheep pellets and blood and bone fertiliser.
Please see photo of 3 month old plant growing happily in Island Bay. My neighbour also has a healthy 1.5m high 6 month old plant growing happily in Berhampore.
The plant will take a couple of seasons to fruit. Mature trees respond well to a hard pruning in Autumn once done fruiting. Tamerillo trees have a relatively short life cycle of around 5 or so years depending on conditions. When you have a good hardy climatised fruiting plant simply keep the seed from a healthy fruit and grow replacement plants from this seed when needed.
Tamarillos are fun to watch grow due to their fast growth rate, so it isn't long before you can enjoy the fruits of your labour!
