Description

Our strawberries have been grown in cooperation with nature, using organic methods that build soil and regenerate the land. We actively make compost to feed the soil and in turn feed our crops, which produces high quality nutrient dense plant material. No fungacides, pesticides or herbicides have been sprayed on or near our strawberries.

This auction is for 10 bare rooted Strawberry Runners, variety Captain Cook.

This superb tasting heirloom strawberry will be great to have in your garden! Smaller fruit than modern commercial varieties (2.5cm across, 3.5cm long) but they more than make up for this in flavour! Strawberries are a member of the rose family genus Fragaria. Strawberries originated from six main species, mostly from Europe, North America and Chile. Strawberries have been grown in New Zealand since the arrival of early European settlers. Captain Cook Strawberries are amongst the first varieties grown in New Zealand. Strawberries contain very high levels of a compound called ellagic acid, especially in the seeds and leaves, but the compound is also present in useful amounts in the fruit. Ellagic acid has a wide range of biological activity including anti-carcinogenic and anti-mutagenic properties. Strawberries are also high in Vitamin C, Vitamin K and contain useful amounts of Vitamins B1, B5 and B6, and potassium, folate, manganese, magnesium, iodine, biotin and tryptophan. Red-fleshed strawberries are also moderately high in anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are powerful antioxidants that are beneficial in protecting against a range of cancers and heart disease.

On arrival pot up and overwinter in your nursery to plant out in spring, or plant directly into fertile well drained soil in diagonal spacing 40 cm apart. Apply a thick mulch round plants. Strawberries fruit in spring once well established. Keep picking to encourage more fruit set. In Autumn, cut off runners to pot on for more plants, after three years best to refresh your patch.
