Kereopa NZ: Smooth light yellow skin with distinctive purple netting. This is for 8 tubers, about 1.5-2kg.

If you want to plant just one type and harvest plenty, then this is the type you want to grow. It also sprouts first among the others, which means you can grow another crop within 6 weeks after harvest. You probably can grow them all year round. For 3 months, you will cover the leaves when they shoot up, keep earthing them so you will have no worry with the frosts. They grow faster if you add sand or rock dust to the compost for earthing.

Kereopa NZ is a very prolific potato and it grows big and fast, a very heavy cropper. I got more from this variety than any conventional potatoes that I have grown before.

These potatoes are sprouted. It is the big ones on the left and back of the photo. You can put them in now and harvest them from October onwards. They taste wonderful, classified as gourmet potatoes.

I do not have to cook as many for my family of 5. I usually have to cook about 1kg of any store bought variety with a roast dinner. My family only ate 600gm of these potatoes because they are more substantial and nurtritious. I guess because they take longer to grow, about six months in the ground.

Put wet newspaper (if you have sandy soil in the bottom), seaweed, rotten manure, blood & bone , & pine needles, then the potato and covered it with compost. They produce better if you earth them up 2-3 times into a hill and water them during the dry spell. Stop watering after flowering. Some of them are very heavy cropper, more than the general potatoes. They are worth growing if you like good food.

You can grow them now and have them ready for Christmas. I put in lots of sand in the compost mix to increase the soil temperature for faster growing rate.
