For Maori the Manaia is the carrier of supernatural powers-the spiritual guardian which protects the wearer from evil.

It is traditionally depicted with the head of a bird, the body of a man and the tail of a fish- creating a balance between sky, earth and the sea.

This manaia is hand carved on both sides from New Zealand greenstone. It is hung on a plaited, waxed polyester cord which is adjustable. The pendant comes in a velvet bag.
