Outward Bound 32 foot wooden cutter

Listing #: 615811234
Boat location: Wellington City, Wellington
This iconic vessel has spent many days in the Marlborough Sounds and provided a classroom for thousands of Outward Bound students from throughout New Zealand and overseas. All proceeds from the sale go toward replacing our third cutter.

This clinker boat is being sold as hull, decking and thwarts only. Mast, rigging, oars and tiller are not included as these parts were used in the new cutter design.

The Rotarangatahi was built in Jorgenson’s Boatyard, Waikawa in 1990 using hardwood for ribs and kauri for planking.

It is built to a 1936 British Admiralty cutter design with the omission of a drop keel. The keel on this boat is fixed. This significantly improves the stability of the boat and does improve its ability to point up into wind. It also has additional flotation added (fibreglass enclosed polystyrene)

The boat has recently been taken out of service due to high annual maintenance costs and has been replaced by a fiberglass cutter design.

This boat has two main maintenance issues:

1. Rot due to freshwater sitting in the boat while it is moored

2. Cracking and straining of the keelson and some clinker planks due to the extension of the keel on the boat in 2007. Outward Bound boats are run ashore as part of the programme. Changes to the keel has meant that this practice has increased the strain on the structure of the boat.

This boat requires restoration and would suit the enthusiast with an interest in wooden boat restoration and nautical history.

The boat is currently located on the Anakiwa slipway and is sold on an ‘as is, where is’ basis.
