The 107 had the longest run of any Mercedes chassis, 18 years from 1971 to 1989, with a choice of 4-seat fixed head coupe or 2+ seats convertible with a removable hard top option. It began with the 3.5L V8 engine, increased for the American market until it reached 5.6L, but emission regulations meant performance did not always match the larger engine size.
The 280SL was created in response to the oil crisis of the late 1970s. The M110 engine, is a fuel-injected, 2.8 litre, straight-six, with twin overhead cams. This smaller, lighter engine with up-shift at lower revs was seen as a more economical approach and is very suited to the modern day. However, it is fully capable of more sporty performance at higher revs.
This car is an affordable New Zealand new classic with only 180,000 kms on the clock. It has been regularly serviced, kept under cover and only run on dry days. It is ready to drive and enjoy and would respond well to continued care.
As is to be expected, there are signs of age which any owner would normally attend to. Currently, I am refurbishing the chrome sill strips beneath the doors and the heater control mechanism, using original parts which are readily available. The soft top is due for replacement soon as the material is beginning to wear, but it is still fully usable. A separately sourced hard top is currently installed and will be included, as is the personalised plate.
I have enjoyed this car for the past 7 years and only a change of circumstances has persuaded me to part with it. However, I will continue reconditioning work.
Please feel free to ask questions.
