Hi! I’m Muriel the Pink VW Kombi. I’m 40 years old and still going strong. In fact, I’ve just had a brand new carburettor fitted, my oil changed and my WOF, erm, WOFed – so I’m up and raring to go for summer. (I don’t like to boast, but last summer I nipped over Dansey’s Pass in Otago. If you know it, you’ll know that’s impressive!)

Over the last ten years, I’ve been taken camping all over New Zealand - from Auckland to Dunedin, and most places in between. (Tiki Tiki on the East Coast in the North, and Blackball on the West Coast in the South were particular favourites.)

My original papers say I started life (as a Dormobile) in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, England … had my 30,000 mile service in Roma, Italy … and emigrated to good ol’ NZ in August 1980.

Since 2001, I’ve been with the same family in Christchurch, and they’ve got all the details of everything that’s been done to me – most of it by Mark at The Metric Nut (he can service me any time!)

Oh yeah, I was originally red, but when I was re-registered in 2005, I had a complete make-over and, after having all my rust cut out, became pink. Or, if you prefer, lilac. Or magenta.

I’m as reliable as anything because I’m regularly serviced, and, unlike my owners (who are also in their 40s), I don’t have any embarrassing leaks. But cos I’ve had an exciting life, I will admit to a few dents, scratches and spots of rust.

My back seat fold into a double bed, I’ve got a gas cooker under my passenger seat, and loads of cupboards, a built in chilly-bin and sink. My pop-top would need re-canvassing to be usable, with my original fold-out pop-top cots stored in the garage.

My family don’t really want to sell me but they don’t use me as much as they used to (family growing up and all that). So if someone out there wants to buy me and take me out more, then I’m quite happy to adopt a new family.
