A Depression era tale set on the road in rural New Zealand

Runaway Kate is in search of her father who has gone to seek work in the city. Despite her strong will and self-reliance the road isn't the safest place for a 13 year old girl, until she meets Patrick who rescues her after she's caught stealing fruit from an orchard. Kate becomes his wise-cracking, ever-present shadow. As far as she's concerned it's a partnership. But Patrick a World War 1 veteran, on the run himself for assaulting a repossession man, doesn't need some smart alec kid weighing him down.

Reluctantly they become travelling companions and Patrick figures he can use Kate as a temporary cover, throw the police off his trail, and make a good escape. A bond of friendship develops between the unlikely paid and with a little friendly help, a dramatic series of narrow escapes keeps them one step ahead of the law until it seems their luck may have run out...
