Jude Fawley is a stone mason who loves learning. Inspired by his childhood school master he longs to go to university and single mindedly studies in hope of getting a place. His studies however, are interrupted when Jude blindly falls for and marries Arabella Dunn, the daughter of a local pig farmer.
