For many years, this was the only officially licenced live Abba recording available. It was released at a time when interest in Abba was at an all time low, none of the former band members were involved in its release and it charted poorly. This was 1986, six years before Abba Gold revived interest in them again in a big way in 1992.

This original, 1986 copy of Abba Live is very difficult to obtain now. It was pressed in Germany. It's out of print, as is it's 1997 remastered version. The 1997 version can still be obtained on sites like eBay though, and is not so rare and collectible. It may not quite be the "holy grail" for Abba collectors, but it's still regarded as a legendary release.

The drum sound is heavy and full, the overall effect crystal clear and pristine. Harmonies are immaculate, melodies melt in your heart. Has "Does Your Mother Know" ever sounded so powerful? Was "Dancing Queen" really this infectious? The applause between tracks definitely helps the atmosphere, while both the opening, stuttering start to "Take a Chance on Me" and the piano-backed, over-the-top production on "Thank You for the Music" are simply spine tingling. -Everett True
