Named after the September Earthquake, Guitar Series 7.1 is a family of seven guitars. The wood was donated by the owners of many historic and iconic Christchurch buildings that fell in the earthquake. The seven guitars are each named after the building from where the wood came from and each guitar in the series tells its own story. “In many cases the timber itself dictated the story and each piece could be given a new life and an entirely new purpose.

This piece of historic kauri came from the Great Hall of the Arts Centre (formerly the University) and was originally a ceiling vent; hence the round holes.
A deep recess, left in three of these holes, is filled with a clear resin embedding pounamu carvings that represent the significance of the wood’s origins. The Koru, designed from a new fern leaf unfolding and representing “New Beginnings”, is a fitting symbol.
The hole in the lower bout contains a double koru, symbolizing the dual use of the building over its lifetime, first as a university and then as the Arts Centre. Each of these uses is well represented by the carvings at the waist. One is in the shape of a new fern unfolding, with many small buds developing, to symbolize the wide variety of art forms.

The other is a simple spiral koru to represent the “circle of knowledge,” starting with small beginnings and continuing to grow until the end of life. The muted, quiet presence of these carvings tells a story without overwhelming the history of the timber.
