A 1968 Ventura V1500.

A well made guitar that nods it's head towards the Gretsch 1622 Country Gent - of George Harrison fame.

It does carry the general look of the 1622 - 24.6" scale, 22 frets, zero fret, painted on F holes, 2" deep, Hollow double cut (16.5" wide - not the full 17"!?), MoP thumb print inlays, similar control layout, etc.

High end build quality from the Matsumoku factory and a period when the Japanese luthiers were beginning to hit their stride.

Pickguard long gone. I believe a stock Gretsch one would fit if you wished. Also some goon had painted ‘Pres.’ on the body which I have managed to remove. The ‘gold’ plating is a bit worn on most of the hardware. All the binding is in excellent shape.

The fully adjustable bridge has had the string mute cut off. Those mutes were ordinary anyway as was the original vibrato unit which I took off and replaced with a nice old heavy chrome Kay ‘harp’ trapeze which works well. The original vibrato is included. You could also, easily fit a Bigsby.

The electronics were shot so, using the same holes I have set it up with a tone POT for each PU on the upper bout and a VOL pot for each PU plus a kill switch at the back. Rotary PU selector lower front bout. Wiring diagram included.

According to the Ventura catalog it is a ‘dark candy apple’ in colour. Dark wine? burgundy?.... a very nice finish anyway. I've wanted to use old Bakelite radio knobs on a guitar and given the colouring of this gat I grabbed the chance. There is a white knob option available if you prefer. (see pic). I could also do gold.

The guitar is a player with some lovely tones. The tuners work well, the action is low and the neck is thin, fast and extremely comfortable. The [single coil] PU's sound terrific and the electrics all work. Minor chips here and there and a bit of dinging on the top of the headstock but nothing to cause concern.

A stunning looking guitar and a lot of fun to play.
