Description

WHISTLE (Tin/Penny/Irish) Clarke 'ORIGINAL' style D Black

Clarke's whistle in Key of "D", Black with gold foiled markings.

Genuine English Clarke 'Original' Whistle! considered one of the Best Whistles by experienced players.

UK made and boxed by Clarke Whistles renowned the world over for their quality whistles.

The favourite instrument of distinguished Tinwhistle players ever since 1843, this Clarke Tinwhistle can be considered the Stradivarius of Tinwhistles.

Comes with Fingering Chart and instructions.

The instrument is still made of tinplate with a wooden mouthpiece. Delicate operations still continue to be done by hand and, most importantly, Robert Clarke’s traditional conical bore has been retained to give the instrument its unique sound, called ‘chiff’.

No other Tinwhistle has the same degree of ‘chiff’ as a Clarke.

The tone of the Clarke Tinwhistle is clear and flute-like, but it is also described as ‘crisp and responsive’ by Bill Ochs, and ‘husky and sensual’ by Mary Bergin. All these descriptions add up to ‘chiff’ – what Tommy Makem calls ‘The great Clarke tone’. This is what makes a Clarke Tinwhistle unique.

Their story begins with Robert Clarke, a poor agricultural labourer in the village of Coney Weston, Suffolk, England, who made the first tin whistle in the year 1843. He appreciated it's unique sound compared with the wooden ones then available, and decided to manufacture the whistle, so loaded a barrow with tinplate and tools, walked across England to Manchester with his young son to set up a workshop. Along the way, he made whistles and played in markets for cash.

The Tin Whistle was also known as the Penny Whistle because street performers used to get a penny for playing to passers by.

Having just six holes, it is even simpler than a recorder.
