Description
Alfred Meakin “Famous Cottages” 4 Cups & 4 Saucers - c.1930. The cups are 7.5cm tall by 9cm in diameter. The saucers are 2.5cm tall by 14.5cm in diameter.
These items have been made of a porcelain base and covered in a translucent glaze and left to dry. A blue transfer print of John Constables’ cottage has then been applied to both sides of the cups, as well as to the top of the saucers.
One cup has a few light spots of staining inside the cup. Two saucers have very light wear to the top along the edge. Another has a light indentation on the underside.
Alfred Meakin Ltd. was a pottery factory from Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, which was in operation from 1875 until 1976. It produced mainly domestic items. The “Famous Cottages” pattern was produced from 1930 until the 1960’s.
Judging from the backstamp, I believe that these pieces were made in the 1930’s. They are fantastic items of pottery and would look great in someone’s china cabinet, as well as in domestic use.
