A very lovely piece. Almost spherical with smooth to the touch glaze.
I believe this was made by Earnest Shufflebotham in the fifties. I have included a brief bio as it is so interesting.
Earnest was trained by Keith Murray, a New Zealand-born ceramic designer, while at Wedgwood in England. He developed into a master thrower and was a key interpreter of Murray's innovative domesticware. In 1948 Shufflebotham was brought to New Zealand by Crown Lynn along with a number of other designers including Frank Carpay to work in the company's 'Specials Department'. He was employed to produce more upmarket works that would expand the market for Crown Lynn ceramics. He was one of the few professional 'throwers' working in New Zealand during the period from his arrival in 1948 to his departure in 1957.
The pot has no cracks or crazing that I can detect.
Faults include a small chip on the base and some staining and marking inside. (see photos) There are two or three hard to detect markings that cannot be photographed and I have not tried to clean on the oustside of the pot.
Marked underneath with the tiki two stars and CROWN LYNN NEWZEALAND handpotted. Impressed but hard to see the number number15.
Displays beautifully.
