OTTER MESSER OAK 440C

This is a very handy hunting knife with continuous blade. The guards are not riveted on as per other blades. Instead it is milled and ground from one block of 440C German Steel and hardened to 58 HRC.

The scales are adapted from attractive Oak are riveted with stainless rivets onto the "tang". At the end of the handle is seated, a hollow rivet for attaching a loop. Comes with nice leather sheath of thick full grain leather and is secured with a leather strap with dome fastening.

Very suitable for dressing small game to large deer and easily sharpened razor keen. Tasks from skinning to capeing to boning out. The blade shape is matched for. We have tested the blade for edge retention by using it in chopping and slicing tasks in hardwood timber beside our other blades. Clearly OTTER MESSER have done fine work tempering the blade. It performed like other top steels when we compared them doing the same tasks and returned to shaving sharpness with surprising speed. 440C is a classic knife steel that well deserves its long held popularity.

440C high carbon stainless steel contains 0.95% to 1.2% Carbon so its one one of the higher carbon steels and 16% to 18% Chromium for good corrosion resistance with 1% Manganese and 0.75% Molybdenum as its other alloying elements. Thus, it is tough enough to withstand hard use but is also hard enough to retain and return to a very keen edge when resharpened. This has been reflected in our comparison tests.
