  • Closed: Sun 28 Apr 2013, 8:45 pm
Listing #: 584430847
Genuine ANTIQUE South African pocket knife that features the Boer War enemy commanders Transvaal President Paul Kruger & Christiaan Rudolf de Wet who was a Boer general, rebel leader and politician.

The reverse of the knife features the Afrikaans language names of the Boer States that these men controlled.....The Transvaal & The Republic of the Orange Free State (Afrikaans: Oranje-Vrystaat; Dutch: Oranje-Vrijstaat)

Eendracht Maakt Macht = Unity is strength

The closed knife measures 90 mm long

NO Maker details that I can see

PREVIOUS knives that I have owned and sold were made by "Carl Schlieper Solingen"

This knife was likely German-made CIRCA 1896

Blades show evidence of much sharpening, use, and AGE

UNUSUALLY this example has a CORKSCREW which previous models that I have had DID NOT

REPRODUCTIONS of this knife are known to exist

However this (Obviously OLD & GENUINE example) is absolutely GUARANTEED to be OVER 100 years old

I have included a picture of one modern-made example of this knife, sans wine opener. (the "Stainless Steel" blades SHOULD alert all but the most gullible of collectors)

The Second Boer War (Dutch: Tweede Boerenoorlog, Afrikaans: Tweede Boereoorlog), commonly referred to as The Boer War and also known as the South African War (outside of South Africa), the Anglo-Boer War (among most South Africans) and in Afrikaans as the Boereoorlog or Tweede Vryheidsoorlog ("Second War of Liberation"), was fought from 11 October 1899 until 31 May 1902, between the British Empire and the two independent Boer republics of the Orange Free State and the South African Republic (Transvaal Republic)

The casus belli to the conflict was the Jameson Raid, 1895-96.

(Casus belli is a Latin language expression meaning the justification for acts of war. Casus means "incident", "rupture" or indeed "case", while belli means "of war".)

After a protracted, hard-fought formal and guerrilla war, the two independent Boer republics were annexed into the British Empire.
