Million Dollar Mouse is a campaign to raise $1 million to eradicate mice from New Zealand’s Antipodes Islands. The Antipodes Islands are our ecological treasures that lie 800km southeast of Bluff, they provide a safe place for a number of penguin, albatross and other seabirds to breed, feed and rest. A number of the species found on the Antipodes can be found nowhere else - so it is important that we ensure they are a safe haven for these species. Mice, the only mammalian pest on the islands, eat the eggs and chicks of seabirds. Mice also eat huge numbers of insects and the seeds of plants that are critical to the health of the islands and a food source for the native species. So we need to remove them to ensure the future of our seabird species. The Million Dollar Mouse fund has been established as a partnership between DOC and Gareth and Jo Morgan.
