Fly fishing on the Tongariro River or one of the many streams flowing into Lake Taupo, fishing from a boat or just cruising on the lake, snow-skiing Whakapapa or Turoa, white-water rafting, tramping, eco-tours, rock climbing are some of the exciting attractions of the area. If you'd prefer a more leisurely pace take a day trip to the vineyards of the Hawkes Bay or relax in the nearby thermal waters at Tokaanu.
