The texts cover four major text types:

1. narrative (personal and biographical writing)
2. expository (informative, descriptive writing, essays and reports)
3. persuasive (letters, editorials, reviews)
4. visual presentation (graphs and charts, maps and diagrams, cartoons and captions).

Each unit comprises 6 sections. BEFORE READING is intended to awaken interest in the topic and get pupils to relate their experiences and knowledge with the model passage under READING. The exercise under READING COMPREHENSION checks understanding of the passage. VOCABULARY EXERCISE and GRAMMAR EXERCISE support and extend knowledge of vocabulary and grammatical structures commonly used. The section WRITING provides the opportunity to be creative.

The high-interest, non-fiction articles are designed to capture students' attention. Includes an answer key. Topics include:

• Weather Report (share information)
• Recycling Rubbish (convince others)
• Read a Map (convince others)
• Top five: Longest School Years (Use pictures)
