Description
'News Talk: Media Stories on Unemployment' by Shirley Leitch Dunmore Press Ltd., Palmerston North 1990, softcover, 142 pages. In excellent original condition, all pages clean.
Dr. Shirley Leitch's study of the media's portrayal of unemployment and the unemployed. Growing out of the author's Ph.D thesis, the book finds the news discourse on unemployment simplistic, ideological and pervasive. "Their stories are full of stock characters cast in set pieces: the dole bludger ripping off the taxpayer, the victim grateful for state handouts, the politician (incompetently) battling inflation on behalf of the ailing economy. And yet there are always two sides to every story and no idea so dead that it cannot be resurrected in the name of controversy or entertainment."
Chapters include: Neutrality as Ideology: News Work News Language Keeping It Simple: Economic Policy and Unemployment Industrial Reporting Counting the Cost Victims and Dole Bludgers Youth Unemployment, etc.
