21cm x 30cm, black ink on white paper. Arguably the most famous "artwork" of the century. Purchased by me at Dunbar Sloane's auction on 15 May 2007.

My starting price is the $4,562 ($4,000 plus 14.06% buyer's premium) which I paid for it, plus an adjustment for 10 years' inflation (calculated at a lower rate than houses have risen since 2007).

Part of what has come to be known as the "Paintergate" affair. With the then Prime Minister refusing to either confirm or deny that she was the actual artist, the value of this sketch lies more in its political significance than in its artistic merit.

Interesting background information from the New Zealand Herald in April 2007: "The woman selling the drawings (at Dunbar Sloanes) bought both sketches at a 2001 fundraiser at Ellerslie School. She paid $80 for the 'Clark' and $10 for Matt Robson's drawing of the old Supreme Court. The head of the fundraising committee at the time sent some A4 paper to Parliament and just said if anybody would like to draw something, great. Matt did one and got Helen to do one, too. At the time we presumed she had done it."

The book, "Handbags & Hovercrafts, Trade Me's most memorable auctions", published in 2010, devoted an entire chapter of 10 pages to my previous listing of the sketch from 15-25 May 2007, which received 33,304 views and 209 questions!

BONUS: The successful purchaser will receive a free copy of "Handbags & Hovercrafts".

2 light folds and a very small coffee stain!
