Description
I bought this huge pew maybe 15 years ago second hand from Trade Me as an "English Antique"
Sorry the pictures are a bit dusty, -as you can see, it's taking up space in our garage.
However, searching for similar pews online makes me think it would've been made around 1850.
It was certainly hand made, no evidence of any power tools or automation here!
It seems to have mortise-&-tenon joints holding its main body to its ends, with a tongue and grooved panel slotting into the back rails.
There is a basic fleur carved onto one end panel, and the other end is plain, as if it were next to the wall.
There is a full length narrow hymn-book shelf along the back at seat level.
It's been varnished a dark mahogany-like colour, but the couple of relatively recent chips on the top rail, show a lighter wood below.
There are also initials carved into the back of the seat, mostly along the upper rail.
I'm no wood expert, but it is extremely heavy, so I guess oak, or even Kauri if it didn't actually come from England.
It measures 3.66m long (12 ft), 93cm (about 3ft) high, and about 50cm deep.
It takes 3 people to lift, -it's not even easy for me to drag it out for photos alone.
It's on Waiheke Island, so you would need to bring a van or trailer (a long one!) and maybe a friend over if you win the auction. Please take this added cost into account when bidding. Unless you already ARE on Waiheke, -which would make it easier.
THE LAST EIGHT PHOTOS ARE FOR INSPIRATION ONLY. They are borrowed from Pinterest. They have inspired me, now, so if it doesn't sell, I think I will sand it down before re-listing at ahigher price
