Description
Outstanding Old Antique Chinese Qing Dynasty Bamboo Root Carving depicting Budai [Hotei in Japan] / Pu-Tai (The Laughing Buddha). He dates to about circa 1800 and is in fine condition for his age apart from some minor age related cracks and wear as expected. He is extremely well carved and displays superbly. He has great surface patina in places from a couple of hundred years of love and attention. An excellent example. [The colour change on his belly is just the natural ridge line of the bamboo going around the root].
He stands about 31.5cm high (about 12.4 inches high). He is about 12.5cm wide and 14cm deep. He weighs a very hefty 1.65kg unpacked.
Serious offers are welcome.
"Budai / Hotei is traditionally depicted as a fat, bald man wearing a robe and wearing or otherwise carrying prayer beads. He carries his few possessions in a cloth sack, being poor but content. He is often depicted entertaining or being followed by adoring children. His figure appears throughout Chinese and Japanese culture as a representation of both contentment and abundance."
