Description

FAKES & FORGERIES 2023 Exhibition is here!

Introducing "Sweep it Under the Carpet" by NZ Artist Raewyn Green inspired by Banksy.

We are delighted to announce that the winning entry & many other of this year's F&F's 2023 have already sold, direct from the Mangaweka "Yellow Church" Gallery (see pic 4), yet there is still a chance to add to your Art investment portfolio, with selected works now being offered, right here on Trade-Me!

Including this one...

"Sweep it Under the Carpet" by Raewyn Green is inspired by Banksy, yet has the added clever Twist of the little doggy pissing against a bollard (or is it onto the mural itself? - seems to be having a little chuckle as it relives itself!!). Comes in at 20"x16" size, created in Acrylic paint onto Canvas (as seen in Pic 1).

Banksy's original "Sweep it Under the Carpet" appeared on a wall on Chalk Farm Road, North London in 2006. It portrays a woman dressed as a maid who is sweeping dirt under the cover of a brick wall. The work is said to represent the reluctance of the Western world to deal with global issues such as poverty, or other issues dear to Banksy (see pic 2).

Banksy explained the meaning behind this visual: “In the bad old days, it was only popes and princes who had the money to pay for their portraits to be painted, this is a portrait of a maid called Leanne who cleaned my room in a Los Angeles motel. She was quite a feisty lady.”

The same visual was used by Banksy over a Damien Hirst spot painting in 2007 "Keep It Spotless" sold at auction at Sotheby’s New-York on 14 February 2008 for a record USD 1.9 million! (see pic 3).

We reserve the right to withdraw any artworks offered here on TM which have not attracted a starting bid, yet ALL are no reserve, so any bid here ensures a sale.
