Charity Art Sale – Rewarewa
Watercolour on cold pressed paper Dennis Chippindale 2023
This artwork and 8 others form a visual essay discussing the Nine Tall Trees of the Ngai Tahu treaty claim. See our other listings for the rest of the artworks.
We are an architectural practice based in Otautahi. Recently, we were fortunate to undertake some work for Tuahiwi kura. At the urging of the Tumuaki, our Principal Dennis was compelled to improve his understanding of the area's history. His course of inquiry eventuated in him reading the documents detailing Ngai Tahu's Tribunal settlement claim. These saw Ngai Tahu in position whereby they were dispossessed of the majority of their land and associated mahinga kai. Dennis was inspired by the metaphor of the "nine tall trees" and also by the peaceful acceptance shown by Ngai Tahu in the 25 years since the agreement was signed.
As well as being an accomplished architect, Dennis is a prolific amateur artist. Always keen to express himself through the medium of art and encourage others to remain lifelong learners, he created nine artworks: “tall” trees endemic to Te Waipounamu which represent the nine parts to Ngai Tahu’s settlement claim. These artworks featured on our Christmas cards last year, and we are excited to announce that all profits will go towards funding Ngai Tahu’s school starter packs. Please bid generously!
You are bidding on the original artwork…this is NOT A PRINT. Frame not included but may be purchased for an additional $30 Collect from Christchurch Central. Contact to be made within one week of auction closing.
