Description
Discover this captivating 3D hanging wall sculpture by the renowned New Zealand artist, Leo Cappel, titled McKenzie Country
Titled McKenzie Country, it celebrates the beautiful scenery of the McKenzie Basin, between Christchurch and Queenstown in the South Island of New Zealand. The braided McKenzie River reaches right outside of the sculpture, because Cappel felt it was wrong to limit painting and works of art to neat picture frames. Mt Cook stands sentinel in the background. This is a sculpture made by someone who loved this land.
McKenzie Country of course gets its name from the Scottish shepherd and convicted sheep rustler James McKenzie, who was sentenced to 5 years in jail and managed to escape 3 times. He only served 9 months and was pardoned to an apparent miscarriage of justice. He went to Australia, never to be seen again in New Zealand.
This intricate piece measures 1,100mm high x 1,510mm wide x 240mm deep and while large and intricate, it is easy to hang.
Don't miss this opportunity to own a piece of New Zealand's artistic heritage.
Cappel is known as a prolific artist in many fields, painting, sculpting, carving and many more. A graduate of the Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam, and an associate of well known Kiwi artists including Tony Fomison, with whom he worked at Canterbury Museum, also a group including Colin McCann and Lois McIvor, who worked regular together from each other's homes in Titirangi. He was also well known for his creations at the Auckland War Memorial Museum, where he designed and created the Birdhall, (scene of the current Albatross Exhibit) and the Museum of Canterbury, where some works include the popular Maori rock quarry scene.
Leo passed away four years ago and this is one of the last of the larger works being released by the family to support his widow Karen, his greatest supporter.
This work needs to be collected from Auckland. Due to it's size and nature, it would require a lot of expertise to pack for shipping.
