TO THE ENDS OF THE EARTH Norman McLeod and the Highlanders’ migration to Nova Scotia and New Zealand
Author: Neil Robinson (author of “The Lion of Scotland, 1952) Published 1997 by Harper Collins Publishers (New Zealand Ltd)
“In 1817 a fiery preacher called Norman McLeod left the Scottish Highlands for Nova Scotia with a band of devoted followers. So began one of the great migration stories of the nineteenth century. After 35 hard years in St Ann’s, McLeod, now in his seventies, set out again with 800 followers—this time to the infant colony of New Zealand, settling in Waipu, Northland.
This book tells a romantic story of adventures on land and at sea, of twice fashioning a new way of life in different parts of the world. Peppered with extraordinary tales drawn from the personal accounts, letters and diaries of the settlers, the book also includes an invaluable appendix listing the names of all the passengers who made the voyage on the six ships from Nova Scotia to New Zealand.
Strong links still endure between the three communities, and Neil Robinson brings the story up to date with the 1994 unveiling of a memorial to McLeod at his Assynt birthplace in Scotland.”
The book is in excellent condition, although ex-library.
