Description

Thelma Mareo, a young actress died in mysterious circumstances in 1936.

Prior to her death Thelma had formed a close relationship with the most famous dancer of the times, the flamboyant, beautiful, and often outrageous, Freda Stark.

Thelma's husband Eric Mareo, a temperamental and narcissistic musician was exceedingly jealous of his wife's relationship with Stark.

However Thelma, much younger than her husband was lonely, stifled within a marriage, in which she was expected to give up everything for Eric and his musical career.

Furthermore Eric was prone to angry outbursts which often lead to violence.

In light of the key players it was perhaps inevitable that Thelma's murder and Eric's subsequent trial and eventual conviction caused a sensation in the New Zealand of the mid 1930's.

Freda was the main witness for the prosecution and despite her infamy' in some quarters, most New Zealanders believed Mareo to be guilty.

Although the case seemed to be fairly straightforward, obtaining a conviction was not.

Mareo was tried twice and there were many amongst the 'establishment' including the second trial judge and the Crowns overseas expert medical witness. Furthermore, many 'ordinary' New Zealander's would not have been expected to 'approve of Freda Starks lifestyle.

Why then did the vast majority of 'ordinary' New Zealander's believe in Mareos guilt?

The authors take the reader on an intriguing journey through the life and times of Freda Stark, Thelma, Eric & the events surrounding her Thelma's tragic death & her husbands subsequent conviction.

They point to a unique New Zealand 'way of seeing' the world, to explain the reaction of the nation to the death of a relatively unknown actress. A 'way of seeing' which is in part explained by the times (the depression of 1930's), but which may still be relevant today.
